Re: What is web services?
What is web services?

It seem to keep changing. I've given up on it.

In .Net parlance, a component is a special type of class that resides in a file called an assembly. A component class offers services that client code may call upon and use (e.g. file I/O and data(base) access.) Usually when a GUI application references and uses a component, the component becomes included with the application?s own assemblies. However, it is possible to place a component on a server so that its services can be accessed over the Internet or over a network. When a component is placed on a server in such a manner, so that it can be accessed by client code via web services protocols, such a component is called a web service. Therefore NASA could e.g. encapsulate a lot of the data and processing it does as classes or components, and make them available over the web via web services protocols, then call them web services. Universities and companies could then create applications that access the government agency?s resources by referencing them in their application projects, almost as easily they reference regular components on their machines.

As for web services acceptance is concerned, I believe more PR and other work need to be done to increase acceptance.
