The key to IM is the user base
As much as I love M$.

The key to IM is the user base hence the fact the MSN messenger is a part of Windoze has little influence over it actually being used. Given the fact that the clients will not interoperate AIM-MSN messenger you are forced to use AIM if you want to talk with folks in the AIM user base.

You can easily install AIM or the AOL client (if you're an AOl user) and get access to communicate with by far the largest number of IM users (the AOL IM user base)
