I buy that...
As a corp IM user I can honestly say my productivity has increased. Like you said, no more waiting 30 minutes to get a one-line answer to a question... less regular emails, and we can trade files back and forth very easily...

"Take a look at this spreadsheet and let me know what you think." BAM it's done and you didn't write an email with an attachment either.

It's good stuff and works very well at work.
