I agree...but
There are some companies that want to use IM and control its use. My company is just one of htose. We currently block all IM use. However, we are looking at deploying Microsoft Live Communication Server (LC) for internal use only. We are doing this because with a properly deployed LC, AD, Exchange 2003, and Office 2003 there are significant productivity enhancments. Mostly, Microsoft has built presense awareness into these products so when I'm reviewing someone Excel spreadsheet and they are online, I can collaberate on the document in real time from inside the <ocument.

This will greatly reduce the load on our Exchange servers, as people will not be e-mailing each other one or two line questions anymore. We are also using Microsoft SharePoint Services which builds in the presense awareness.

Another benefit is that we are able keep logs of all IM traffic on a SQL database. Many companies are being regulated to keep at least one years worth of all communication. This includes IM and therefore the publicly available IM products are no good.

Sure, this is a minority of companies and that is the very reason why Yahoo and AOL are dumping thier products. Microsoft is just able to provide a better product and the market is very slim for corporations that want this ability.
