- SAP Business byDesign may need redesign
-
After four years of R&D and a $400-m investment, SAP has come up with a Software as a Service (SaaS) model which they say will address over 600,000 companies. They seem to have missed a key point in trying to come up with a "one size fits all" model. Salesforce (salesforce.com) and others such as Plexus Online (plex.com) have succeeded by developing online software targeted at specific industry segments. What works well for a service provider is not likely to meet the demands of manufacturers, a market Plexus has grown while serving in the past decade. SAP, because of its size and marketing power, will certainly find some customers (mayabe some that have been using the traditional SAP model), but it may be the competitors who fare best with the new attention being focused on this software area.
