Exactly right
A competitor comes out with a word processor or a spreadsheet and then that company gets bought out by a bigger company and said software goes down the tubes pretty quick. Wordperfect was it's own company and then was bought out by Novell who later sold it to Corel (Yes, it was sold TWICE!!). Lotus 1-2-3 was bought out by IBM. What has made Office more than anything is the fact that it is put out by a company that has enough capital behind it to keep it from being bought out and watered down. Openoffice.org has an excellent shot at putting a dent in Microsoft's dominance because it is open source, and not tied to the fate of a parent company...
