There are a lot of things coming together at the same time to make
alternatives more attractive. There is the push by governments to use open file formats, the drastically reduced need to actually PRINT documents, the increased need to share documents, and the increased quality and acceptance of SaaS tools and applications.

This all combines to make Microsoft's baroque features and bloat seem even more silly.
