"IBM Lock in is what"

IBM spun off Eclipse into an independent foundation. All
source is available under the CPL. No lock-in required!

"who will control Java in the future"

Java is a language, Eclipse is a tool. The future of the Java
specification is controlled by Sun, though third parties can
have their input via the Java Community Process (JCP).

Java, however, is extensible and supports native binding.
This is what is used to produce the SWT. SWT is not part of
the Java specification. It was developed by IBM and released
to the world under the CPL.

"IBM is borrowing a page from MS - getting developers to
sign onto the tools, and then using them as the change
agents in enterprises."

Funny I don't remember VisualStudio being open sourced!

Eclipse is the basis of IBM's Websphere development
platform and obviously that platform benefits from
developers familiarity with Eclipse. However, IBM (like what
they did with Apache, support for Linux) recognises the
benefits of the open source development model -
comparisons with MS are ridiculous.

"What will become more interesting will be what Java tools
become implemented by .NET with the truce declared
between Sun and MS."

Of no interest if java is simply going to produce .NET
runtimes. If it can't be deployed on multiple platforms
many of us won't be interested.
