Dangerous to use ZDNet as your only source of information
Eclipse is an extensible IDE for multiple languages
including Java. Eclipse is written on top of SWT (Standard
Widgets Toolkit).

However, SWT can be used independently of Eclipse and
also open source. As it is licensed under the CPL and can
be used in proprietary projects.

SWT provides native look and feel for Java applications. SWT
applications can run on :
Windows 98/ME/2000/XP
Windows CE (ARM PocketPC) (Instructions)
Windows CE (ARM PocketPC, J2ME profile) (Instructions)
Linux (x86/Motif) (Supported Versions)
Linux (x86/GTK 2) (Supported Versions)
Linux (AMD 64/GTK 2) (Instructions)
Solaris 8 (SPARC/Motif)
QNX (x86/Photon)
AIX (PPC/Motif)
HP-UX (HP9000/Motif)
Mac OSX (Mac/Carbon)

SWT, unlike Java Swing, runs native code improving
performance and adopting the look and feel of the
platform it is executed on. This is not knocking Swing, it is
an alternative - horses for courses.

The Eclipse community continues to work on a wide variety
of other project (see [link]http://eclipse.org/projects/
index.html[/link]).

"Don't you silly people know that .net is the only way to
go??? "

Funny, .NET is windows only so should even be compared
with SWT or Eclipse. For others than the NBM crowd
checkout the website, download for free, and give it a try.

Yet another wonderful open source project.
