"Microsoft attained its monopoly on its own, whereas
(according to the DOJ) Oracle would attain a monopoly
through acquisition."

DoJ first began investigation into MS in the early 90s, well
before they obtained monopoly status. They consistently
settled, without precedent, and capitulated to MS demands.

"and I don't think the DOJ should even be involved in this
issue."

Of course they should be involved, but a more equal
application of the anti-trust laws would be desirable.

"Besides, who said the DOJ is "happy" with the MS
monopoly?"

They did, in fact they are so happy with the MS monopoly
they have made public comment against the EU moves to
limit MS behaviour.

"If I recall, a settlement was reached with Microsoft,
entailing changes to Microsoft's business practices. One's
unhappiness with the settlement doesn't mean capitulation
by the DOJ."

Of course not, but here is a perfect example of not just
capitulation but unimaginable denial.

"There are plenty of court rulings that I haven't liked, but
that doesn't mean the judges and attorneys were corrupt;
merely wrong."

The judge and DoJ legal representation were right, the DoJ
decided not to continue with the case after a small part of a
very successful case was reviewed by the Appeals court.

The judiciary wasn't corrupt, the subsequent DoJ u-turn
with the new US administration is indefensible.
