You both missed the mark
the platform is irrelevant.

You want to reach people not their desktop machines.

Virtual IM services are what's needed, make it Windows vs. Linux and you lost before you even started.

Make it accessable from anywhere, cell phone, PDA, desktop, phone line ... that's what's needed.

Tying service to a desktop is obsolete ... keep crowing about 95% market share, the industry is targeting all 100% wherever they are!
