So ... use something that doesn't call home
Look, it's like with the Microsoft EULA -- if you don't like it, use something else.

True, I've found that many of the open source products aren't as feature rich at the proprietary stuff. For example, mySQL doesn't give me all of the widgets that MS SQL does. And OpenOffice doesn't give me the level of integration that MS Office does.

On the other hand, several open source products are superior to their proprietary counterparts (like Mozilla Firefox for instance).

It's a pay me now, or pay me later type of thing. You either accept the activations, knowing that you will be screwed later. Or you use the alternatives to ensure a more-balanced play field.

For me, the Office and DB alternatives work well enough. And some of them (Linux, Apache, Mozilla) seem to work better for what I want to accomplish.
