Different significance
Munich in and of itself is an immeasurably small market share. What it does represent is a step toward establishing a desktop alternative. If you'll look back slightly more than a year ago, I am sure you would agree that there simply was not a viable desktop Linux offering. Once that hurdle was overcome, there is the matter of validating the desktop in a real-world environment. The city of Munich has served as the pilot for a year now, and if there had been glitches, it would have been "back to the drawing board." This closely-watched project has now provided the next level of validation for businesses and governments worldwide, many of whom are now conducting proof of concept trials of a much more limited nature than the Munich project. Linux has come a long way in an amazingly short period of time.

Make no mistake about it, the Munich validation is a landmark in the evolution of the desktop. The major impact on the market will unlikely be felt until businesses are forced to evaluate alternatives in response to the inevitable phasing out of some current MS versions. But it would be vain to downplay this major step forward, which is good for the IT industry and business as a whole.
