Now, on the completely unrelated issue of gun control..

I agreed with your post up to this point.
The fact is, crimes are committed with legally purchased guns that would not be committed if said guns were illegal. Think of the 6 year old kid who brings a gun to school, and shoots a classmate. Think of the disgruntled worker, who shoots up the office.

"Guns don't kill people, people kill people"
Yeah, but guns make it that much easier, don't they?

Now, there are legitimate, legal reasons why people may want a gun.. but does anyone really need an AK-47 or an M16? Of course not. Those that defend the "right" to own such weapons greatly warp the intentions (to my understanding) of the Revolutionary leaders of the US.
