Great
MS responds to things that seriously endanger the cash flow.

They ARE late in everything, including effective security, portability, 64-bit support and home-grown applications.

Security has NOT been addressed effectively yet, and if it weren't for all the embarassing virus break-outs they would still be playing their usual `look at our beautiful GUI and forget about security tune'.

UNIX moved tpo 64-bits in full force in the middle 90's. MS JUST started. If it took them around 16-17 years to come up with a USABLE but still insecure 32-bit PC OS, HOW LONG are thy going to be fiddling with their 64-bit os until it becomes a USABLE production level OS for the data-center? I saw the (HARD TO FIND) announcement on w2004 datacenter that supports up to 64 Itanium-2 processors. Whoever believes that MS can pull off a 64-bit OS for a NUMA architecture in just a couple of years is naive at best. Even by the end of 2003 MS was announcing in their site that they would be releasing a 64-bit windows for the Itanium-2 in the 2nd Q-2004 for UP TO FOUR processors. Now they mention 64 processors. How did the miracle happened? I'll bet that whoever uses it in a data center will be engaging in a very lengthy fight with the MS shoddiness and lack of fore-sight.

MS was, is and it will most likely remain a solution provider for the workgroup: their profits come from selling FAT PC solutions with little concern for larger SMPs or distributed systems. They know well that this is serious business that takes millions of man-hours in R/D. They DO NOT want to invest in long-term platform designs because it does not generate billions in the short run. You can see this by the financial reports of their different business units: their desktop platform raked in billions last year. Their server and data-center lost 100s of millions.

Bottom line, the current BETA PATCH is `security-minded' not security-capable.

Yes they respond to events that threaten their financial standing.
