RE: Total losing proposition
>> I just cannot believe that a company the size of IBM would risk it all for Linux.

They aren't. And it's not that big a risk anyway. They've had successful server products for a long time and have developed a confidence in the product.

>> The safe way to go is to follow Microsoft's lead in web services and the approaching Longhorn wave. The Longhorn wave will make desktop Linux seem like an old and outdated clunker with the new XAML and Avalon technoogies built on top of WinFX.

"Safe"? In what way? "Safe" is not typically best in the long run, nor innovative (as MS claims to be), nor of long term benefit to you. But that's your choice. I won't argue with a pre-determined opinion.

>> IBM is in serious jeopardy here. I have just made a corporate decree that we will NEVER look at Linux.

So how big is your company that your decree would put IBM in jeopardy? For every company like yours (actually, the first I've heard of to make such a "decree"), there are probably ten companies wanting to make a decree NOT to use MicroSoft.

You should check out http://linux.bryanconsulting.com/stories/storyReader$172 which is a real story of a real company that began as a faithful MicroSoft customer, and ended up decreeing never to use MicroSoft products for some very interesting reasons.

>> We have also just finished our entire ENTERPRISE DEPLOYMENT of Office 2003.

Enjoy being part of MicroSoft's ever-growing annuity stream.
