...IBM did the kernel for OS/2 and Microsoft did the GUI.

The author claims that Microsoft still maintains cross-license agreements with IBM because DDE, OLE and COM (all critical Windows components) are IBM contributions.

I've heard it claimed by some authors that the reason Microsoft has such a hard time releasing non-buggy OS's is that critical components were written outside of the company and that MS's own software engineers don't really understand those portions.
