Paid hobbyists?
The big moves to Linux are the Oracles, ERP vendors and the like - going after the largest accounts, where the return on the marketing dollar is greatest. The motive is the crassest possible - profit. If they could see better return elsewhere, believe me you wouldn't even hear the word "Linux." Might not have up til now, without Darl McBride's tireless promotional efforts.

The IBM, HP, etc employees contributing to the OSS may be amateurs in the original sense of the word (loving the endeavor) - this I do not know - but they also love that paycheck.

Does Linux have a place in the hobby world? Well yes, if the hobby is writing software. If it is computer gaming or other activities based on shrink wrap, nope stick with Windows for the moment. It will be a while before Linux is a good choice for the home user with no computer skills.

For the immediate future, Linux will thrive only in the business world. I am guessing it will eventually become a viable home choice, but I am not yet willing to bet on it.
