Linux set to sweep the desktop
Linux will steadily advance on the desktop over the next five years for the following reasons:

1) Large corporations will deploy Linux in increasing numbers of selected niches as they choose lower TCO over advanced capabilities. And they themselves will guarantee lower TCO by funding whatever R+D on Linux it takes to deliver.

2) Foreign governments and institutions will deploy Linux as they seek to secure and nationalize their technology. It is very telling that China specifically stated that their major reason for opting for Linux is the fact that they do not trust Microsoft's shared source. With Asian tech giants Japan and Korea following suit with more development funds, and Europe following a similar course, not to mention a horde of third world nations, Microsoft will be left in the dust.

If it were about superior technology and embedded base, Microsoft would be a clear winner. But the genuine openness diverse ownership of Linux is an irresistable magnet for both business and government in the 21st century. With an OS as pervasive as Intel hardware on the scene, Windows will go the way of IBM's ill fated micro channel. The big guys are looking to avoid proprietary solutions at all costs.

That said, the home user will be the last to switch. The US consumer market will remain an exclusively Windows market for the forseeable future until popular consumer applications are eventually ported.
