I see your point
Bad things can happen. But I have personally known people who were outsourced at equivalent salaries and who moved up to senior management positions that did not exist in their original firms, which were in other lines of business.

The underlying motivation for outsourcing may vary from firm to firm, but for some it just isn't a reasonable business approach to try to maintain an effective IT organization. And although I have not personally seen the situation you describe, I certainly can see that the unscrupulous could take advantage of the opportunity to exploit the departing employees.

Although not an outsource example, I had essentially the opposite happen in an acquisition. I hired a lady, who came in as a new employee, no longevity or whatever. Several months later, my firm acquired her old firm. The new employees retained their longevity, pension rights, etc. Employees were treated fairly by an enlightened management (had enough sense to understand they needed the skills of the acquired staff, and without longevity there wouldn't be that string). However, my employee, who had joined the firm of her own free will, was merged back where she came from, but disadvantaged relative to all her old/new colleagues.

Well, let's just hope that Merrill Lynch made the outsource decision on the "fit" with the firm's core competencies and that the staff were treated fairly.
