Merrill Lynch case is interesting.
A quote from the link you included:

Snodgrass's group proposed replacing the company's Microsoft Exchange servers with a Linux-based product that would have all the same collaboration features and have a cost savings of 70 percent to 80 percent. However, for other reasons that Snodgrass wouldn't discuss, the company's executives decided to stick with Exchange but outsource the management of the groupware to save money.

Maybe part of the reason for the company's attachment to Microsoft was use of VMWare:

The company, using VMware Workstation, was able to migrate to Windows XP while running mission-critical legacy applications on Windows NT. "By embracing virtualization technology and standardizing on VMware for managing our software development environments, Merrill Lynch has seen a 40 to 50 percent cost savings," he said.

The internal battles at Merrill Lynch show the complexity of the issues concerning software use in large enterprises.

The part that bothers me is the groupware outsourcing. Sounds like after the battle the scavengers make the largest gain. I hope that the solutions found by large enterprises do not make outsourcing more feasible.
