That's a nonsensical fear. What country has ever become poor because of trading with another? The Depression happened when we *stopped* trading with other countries, due to the trade war touched off by Smoot-Hawley. But we have prospered as Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea prospered too, despite the fears that they would rob us of all our wealth.

We could simply not become a 3rd world country through trade; there's no mechanism in the free market for it to happen. If wages start to decline here, more manufacturing will be done here, just as Honda and Toyota and Nokia manufacture here. We will reach an equilibrium.

The only thing you'll have to live with, is not being the only rich country in a world of poverty. You'll have to deal with the fact that other countries or areas (like the EU) are our economic peers. That scares some people, but not me. I welcome it.
