Pretty much says it all. I particularly noticed the part where you said you saved for the next time the situation "went sour". That is the smart strategy. I did the same in the 90s, though probably less than I should have. It didn't exactly save my butt when the bubble burst and the recession hit, but it was my "lifeboat" for a while. Throughout this downturn, through various means (legal of course), I've managed to stay afloat financially, though there have been times when my stomache's been tied up in knots over my financial situation.
I thought people had gotten it through their heads by the end of the last recession (9 years ago) that people could no longer count on having a steady job where you just stayed at the same company for 30 or 40 years. Apparently many haven't.
I think there is some truth to what I've heard is contained in the book "Rich Dad, Poor Dad", that working for a living is not the way to get rich. In fact there's a higher risk of poverty taking this route. There are some cases where it leads to being a millionaire, but they're very rare. More often than not people get rich via. "portfolio income", otherwise known as "passive income". That's how most people who want to be rich do it, apparently.
Since most people do work for a living, they're going to be at the whims of business owners, unless they decide to strike out on their own and start their own business.
These are basically the options we have. I say be thankful we have them, because in many other parts of the world, people only have the "work for a living" option and that's it, plus the economies most live in don't even allow capital to work efficiently, or there's corruption so even in the financial world there's no sense of justice. That's why they have rampant poverty.
I've only recently considered the idea of moving, as you've already done. Before it just felt too financially risky. I had developed my contacts where I was. To move to a new job would mean that if the new job decided to dump me I'd be stuck in a situation worse off than where I've been, because I'd have to start my job search and make my contacts from scratch all over again. But the economy has been getting better by all indications (even though for a lot of people they don't "feel" it yet), so it feels less risky now to make the move if necessary.
