- Affects only those whose connectivity and E-mail providers are different

>POP3 is used only to receive email.
>SMTP to send.
Sorry -- that was an overstatement on my part. What I should have said was that there's no reason why anybody should connect to port 25 on an SMTP server that doesn't belong to their connectivity provider, unless ...
>Some of their customers need to connect
>to their independent email provider's SMTP
>servers on port 25.
For that, you should expect to pay extra, or at least have some special arrangement with your connectivity provider [1]. If you want to send E-mail to my folks from your dialup or broadband client, use your ISP's server to do it; don't try to connect directly to my servers.

[1] You'll probably need some special arrangement with your independent E-mail provider, as well. Most of them will see you coming in from an IP address in a comcast.com netblock, with MAIL FROM: some_address@independent_email_provider.com and RCPT TO: somebody_else@some_other_provider.com, and (correctly) bounce it as an attempted relay-rape. If they don't, they'll quickly find themselves blacklisted for running an open relay. They'll generally solve the problem by asking you to send your outbound messages through a Comcast server. - Posted by: TickedOffSysAdmin Posted on: 06/15/04 You are currently: a Guest | Members login | Terms of Use
