If their IT department has any clue, they've already provided a VPN client for work-at-home anyway. Otherwise, that company has probably got spam problems of their own.
Basically, if you're an ISP and you're paying a cost to transit a bunch of spam, you've got the right to shut it off. So if that means you want to charge customers extra to pay for the privilege of originating SMTP traffic to a point outside your network, you've got that right, too. Last time I looked, Bell South and I believe one or two other DSL providers were going so far as to block POP3 going outside their network... not just SMTP. So sorry, that dawg won't hunt... pay extra or deal with your IT department!
