Re: M$ is running out of money
Sheesh! You have no idea how much $50 billion is, do you? The settlements so far have amounted to a bit more than $1 billion, 2% of its total cash reserves. And when you consider that MS has been profitable through this whole economic downturn, which is more than can be said for its competitors, you can see that this presumption of yours just has no sense of proportion.

I think MS's strategy of settling without going to trial is an attempt on their part to alleviate any ill will customers may have towards them. The risk I see is that with enough settlements made, MS will start to be seen as an easy moneypot. All you have to do is sue them, whether you have a legitimate claim or not, and they'll cough up millions of dollars. But, according to the article, MS has gotten some cases dismissed. So perhaps this will serve as a deterrent to opportunists. We'll see.

I think the settlements that involve vouchers will have some positive effect for them. They've said for a while that they want to get consumers to upgrade. This would be an easy way to do that, and I think inevitably some of those vouchers will be used in exchange for newer versions of MS software, despite the fact that the purchasers can spend them on anything they want.
