Just a clue...

if it wasn't for a lot of that "free" software, your beloved Microsoft would still be in the stone ages of computing. There is plenty of software both open and closed, free and purchased out there that is safe and usable. On the flip of the coin, there is a lot of software both open and closed and free and purchased that is pure utter crap and not worth the time or investment.

Your short narrow minded thought process on Open Source and free software is exactly the mentallity that will stifle innovation, creativity as well as the forward momentum of the computing world.

I use a mix of both worlds, and am very productive in my job. And now because of Open Source and the cluster projects, my company will be moving from big servers to scalable clusters to run our databases. Why? It saves us money as a company that I and the other employees get to see with better health and dental benefits, bonus checks, pay raises. It also allows us the flexibility to scale our system to our needs as we need it. Yes you can do that with servers, but the cost.... okay it's cheaper to build a cluster and own the hardware and software than to rent the hardware. Then the scaling up, if we need to increase our capacity beyond what the current server needs, and we don't have another server available.... then there is the delivery, installation, tuning tweaking and finally paralleling. With a cluster we can have 10% over our capacity planned into the system... power on tie in done.


Bottom line is that I am most glad I do not work for you or your company, since I would most likely quit if I was not allowed to use my Linux laptop to perform my duties, like I am now. Hey saves the company money again! One less license for various software and OS that can be applied elsewhere.

Grow up and buy a clue, both systems offer solutions that work. A mix of the two is good on many fronts.
