Well, of course it's economics. My point is that Microsoft only charges as much as they do because they can not because they have to. It's not like they wouldn't see a return if they lowered the price $100. After all, you can buy a decent PC with Vista pre-installed for as much as you would pay for the Vista alone.
Also, if they are charging the maximum that people are willing to pay then they are missing out on a part of the market that would be willing to buy for $100 less. They would make up their money on the price reduction by the sheer volume of sales they would gain.
As for Vista being a good deal, I'm not really convinced. When you consider that it's an OS that manages your files and has some neat tricks, well, I hate to say it but you can get most of those same features in a good Linux distro for free.
