Yup, you're right. For lossless data, you can't guarantee any compression. You can just attempt to match the type of data better. If the data is random or doesn't match the expected type of data, you may even get a larger file size through lossless compression.

For certain types of data, possibly. However, there are many types of data, and an algorithm that is optimal for one type of data may not be optimal for another type. I'm sure it is possible there are algorithms yet to be discovered for some types of data that may yield better results.
