Not limited to 12 bits at all
The reference to 12 bits was related to the camera. I believe it supports 32 bits per pixel but no one can take advantage of that right now.

Lossy compression will nearly always beat lossless compression.

There is no way that on ordinary pictures that you will achieve 875 :1 compression. I know of no compression algorithm that can achieve that level of compression unless the data is all the same and I'm not sure you could get that compression even with that.
