I did say that many photographers work with RAW, PNG or the lossless format that their preferred image software use. You said you use RAW and edit in non-destructive form. We agree.

I said that most photographers who use JPEG use it only to send images to the clients. You said you only use it to send your photos to someone else to view. We agree.

You implied that the lowest common denominator is JPEG. I agree but the highest common multiple right now is PNG. I do not know any OS that cannot render PNG and it is rendered lossless. PNG is a pervasive format better than JPEG format and it was because of the success of PNG that the JPEG --i.e., the Joint Photographic and Electronic Group-- created JPEG2000 as a JPEG format replacement for the things that PNG had accomplished as a GIF replacement.

Break it down (hopefully the PRE tag will work):

{JPEG} {PNG} {JPEG2000}{JPEG XR}

* File size controlled by level of lossy compression.
** File size controlled by compression filters applied (Application software dependent on creation, independent during rendering).
*** Exif data stored through text annotation and not true exif metadata
**** Any patented technology without a work around has patent agreements signed and/or royalty pre-paid.
***** Royalty-free promise from MS.

Bit depth does not include Alpha channel so a 24-bit image with alpha becomes a 32-bit image and a 48-bit image with alpha becomes a 64-bit image.
