Well, you mentioned that you are a photo-enthusiast...
...then you should know, as I do as a professional photographer, that many pros use PNG for several reasons: Lossless, 48-bit color, gamma, etc.

You should also know that those that use JPEG only do so to send images to the end user as they are smaller --but nevertheless lossy-- and keep their archive copies in RAW, PNG or some proprietary format depending upon their preferred photo app. Some times a format is used based on lossless and ability to save exif data.

JPEG2000 was far longer than a day late and much more than a dollar short. It started in 1996 and never got even close to a finished standard until Dec 2000. It wasn't well implemented and not many apps supported it even then.

PNG format was started the week that Unisys/Compuserve made their announcement in December 1994 of GIF patent, was prety much completed by June and accepted as a standard by October.

The difference is that PNG was created to replace GIF for economic reasons and was driven by the web graphics community to suit their needs while the JPEG2000 format was created to replace JPEG as a photographic standard to replace the inadequate JPEG format whose flaws came to light at the advent of PNG.

JPEG2000 failed because it never gave photographers choice of tools nor adequately met their needs. It appears that JPEG XR --or whatever it will end up being called when all is said and done-- will. ...Provided they remain open to all platforms and truly standardized --unlike TIFF.
