- From a pure business perspective I can understand why MS would want to buy SAP - overnight it would give complete access to and control of Fortune 500's. SAP runs on MS windows and SQL server but also on Linux and Oracle as well. Would MS seriously continue development of SAP on these rivals platforms. I think not. So with their usual restrictive practices they would have shut every other non MS vendor out. Also, I believe SAP has or had a large share of Red Hat Linux (someone correct me if I'm wrong) what control would that give them over that Linux distro ? Also theres history between Oracle and SAP; when Oracle applications started to lose out to SAP a few years back, Larry and his boys tried to squeeze SAP by making Oracle licenses a bit more restrictive to SAP users. SAP dropped a few hints about pushing Informix instead and they backed off - they were better off having some sales albeit to a rival product than none at all - Dont expect this to be the end of merger talks it would make a lot of sense for MS.
