100k is not always 100k
Sorry George but voska is correct, there are outside costs that can make even a double in salary not worth it.

Go to Yahoo or Google and search for a salary calculator. You can compare two different zip codes and see what equivalent salaries would be.

For instance, I?ve worked in CT, MA, NY and NH (and lived in CT, NY and NH) and I can tell you that if I made the same salary in each of those states I would have considerably different standards of living. In MA I paid close to 10k a year in state income taxes while in NH there are no state income taxes so that?s about $10,000 right there before you even take your paycheck home. In CT they have a car tax where you pay a percent of what your car is worth in taxes every single year. A new car can run a couple thousand in taxes every single year. And items such as TVs you claim would be the same anywhere are not? in NH there is no sales tax, NY I would pay 8%. Gas isn?t the same from state to state due to state taxes. Some areas have a lot of toll roads. Etc.

And when you start talking country to country then even average goods will cost different amounts. Case in point, I was reading a story not too long ago about Germany. They pointed out in the story that in Germany many people looking to buy high end German cars have found it to be cheaper to actually buy the car in America and have it shipped back to Germany then it would be the buy the same German made car in Germany. Many smaller items wouldn?t have that huge a cost difference so people would just be stuck paying the additional costs.

There are many factors such as these that would need to be accounted for. So yes a $108,000 job could very well end up being a step down on the social ladder then a $56,000 job somewhere else.
