SW engineering (as the MS employees learn in school) explains the problem
But to be fair, Microsoft might already be testing a kernel that supports NX, so we are really arguing if it should be tested in private or public. The real test will be if we can get a comercial distributions like Red Hat released before Microsoft releases a version of Windows with NX.

Sure, I agree that the biggest difference is where the integration of new features happens in the public or in private. Software engineering has proven, over and over, that the more eyes involved in review, the earlier the eyes are involved, the cheaper and better the end product is. If MS misses the boat on a feature, its years after the integration and testing is bought and paid for before the customer has a say ... in the open process the problems are wrung out of the product during the engineering process rather than after they have become inseperable for the end product.

There are so many studies on this phenomena (early vs. late detection) and its impact on large SW development projects that its actually funny to see PR types claiming the closed process is more efficient. Even the US Government realizes that the mistakes it made in the closed DOD projects were exhorbitantly expensive to resolve and in some cases impossible to fix leading to the shelving of billions of dollars of funded R&D because of simple lack of review by peers outside of the development team. MS is relearning the same mistakes the DOD and IBM learned in the 50's and 60's but MS appears to be in denial (because acknowleging the problem means their business model is obsolete - IBM faced up to the problem ... )

what Microsoft releases as final versions are at best betas.

Simply because the development team can only find a small percentage of their design flaws ... logic flaws are extremely difficult to debug by the team that did the work ... the tests they devise simply validate that the flawed logic is implemented correctly ....
