That's not outsmarting anybody
Sun used to have a nice little earner, Solaris on Sparc.
The competition from MS came in the server market, where off the shelf 386 boxes running Windows and Linux could do the work once the domain of big iorn.
MS are not a monoploy in this market.
IBM went with Linux to help compete. Same for HP.
Sun did diddly squat.

Sun releases Java with visions of replacing the OS itself.
Didn't work out.
They expended huge amounts of energy trying though and missed the boat when the bubble burst.

Now they are struggling to maintain market share in the server market.

At this stage of the game Sun haven't outsmarted anybody.
