You mentioned why it would be good for a car analogy but tell me why I shoud care about source code implementation if I'm an application developer/user?

Why did it take MS 10 years to come out with a better editor than edlin?

Just asking ... and why is the print spooler not much better than the original print spool?

Ever look at CUPS ... blows away MS print support my man! So does Ghostscripts et al ... you simply don't obsolete a monopoly product ... its not worth the risk.

But remember, even the train barons let other manufacturers trains ride their tracks ... all the MS foes want is for MS to stop screwing everybody in the name of protecting their market place position and having the nerve to call it "innovation".

At least be honest and call it "protectionism".
