Don't think it's so black and white
The fact that Java is not open source but others want it open sourced kinda disproves your theory.
It does have an 'openness' about it but it started and is still Sun's.

If you scan the list of open source projects, most are catcdh-ups but free replicas of proprietary technology.
That's not progress.

..For one thing the source code that implements the specification is different because it was developed by different teams. This is a good thing...

You mentioned why it would be good for a car analogy but tell me why I shoud care about source code implementation if I'm an application developer/user?

..we could expect that the optimizations of the Sun source code base would make their way into the other code bases and even inspire newer improvements in the alternative products which eventually make their way back into the Sun product...

What would happen if some of those improvements only targeted the world's favotite desktop?
So Sun might get something back?
Where's the beef?
