Alternative implementations drive progress, single source stagnates ideas
Its why genetic evolution works, the best ideas survive and the 12 toed horses don't!

..All of these implementations conform to the Java standards and thus there is no fragmentation...

So what's the difference between them?

For one thing the source code that implements the specification is different because it was developed by different teams. This is a good thing. If every car ever made came out of Ford's Detroit plant you would buy a real cheap Model T today ... alternative sources keep suppliers on their toes.

..Sun's JRE is one of the fastest and most complete. It will be great when they open it up....

Why, what's going to happen?

Well, in this case, we could expect that the optimizations of the Sun source code base would make their way into the other code bases and even inspire newer improvements in the alternative products which eventually make their way back into the Sun product. Its sort of like an Aquarium, the bubbles fill up the treasure chest and cause the lid to lift and the bubbles escape causing the lid to drop again. And it goes on and on until you get tired of watching it but even then it still goes on and on ...
