They are giving it away for free right now.
Sun does not compete with closed standards. They compete with open standards. So for them, this is just to keep people like Micrsoft from ruling the world. If they open source Java and double the usage, that will be good for them, and of course IBM and HP as well. Of course an open source Java might effectively kill .NET and C#. That is the problem for Sun, they want to keep Microsoft from eating them alive, but then they also help the other competitors. Well, great for consumers.
