as i mentioned in my post, this was a sample site put together by an ad company. the samples were of actual ads and pages they put together (they just took html snapshots of the pages the ads were running on for their demos, but those were real ads on those real sites at one time), but if you notice the dates on them, many of them are several months old. ads, by their nature, do not necessarily show up everytime you visit a page, nor do they run the same one for months at a time. thus, finding a live site is not necessarily easy at this time, although i saw one like this for miller beer not too long ago and i am trying to remember where (needless to say, i find sites that do this annoying, so it isnt exactly going to be in my links). if i find a current example, i will post if for you, this was just to show you what had been done. while you do have to 'click on links' to view the samples, the way the ads work on a normal page is that you call up the normal page and the ad starts running. no interim steps. as the ad company itself noted, these are all 'very intrusive', just as a pop-up can be, and thus they are annoying, so not all of their client companies will choose this method, anyway.

i do not have a microsoft machine, so i cannot test ie. i do know the samples worked in every other browser i tested them under, and i do know that i have seen 'live' ads recently. reading through other replies to this article, it would seem i am not the only one who has seen these in a non-ms browser. this is obviously my concern. there are ways around 'pop-ups' that can hit even those of us who use alternate systems, and i find that annoying. just because they arent in widespread use *yet* does not mean they will not be soon. that was the point of the article, and i think we all should be a little worried. writing it off as a microsoft-only problem is foolish.

as to the use of flash, thats not just for demo purposes, thats one of the methods used to bypass pop-up blockers and such.

pop-ups are old news and easily dealt with these days, even for those poor microsoft users; dhtml, flash, and other methods are much more difficult to deal with, and as more people use blockers or move away from ie, the advertisers will get trickier and trickier. sure, you can turn a lot of that off with a modern browser, but there are legitimate uses for all of those techniques (much more so than popups) and dang it, i shouldnt have to turn off flash, dhtml, javascript, pictures, etc. etc., just to avoid frickin' *ads*.

from a google search on 'floating ad', try these:
