- VMware should not slow down; save the dividend money.
-
Unless I am unaware, VMware still doesn't create a virtual machine from a physical one or visa versa. Let me demonstrate why that enhancement is desirable and hence why paying dividends may not be the best use of the new IPO money.
Say you have 130 PCs accessing three or four databases through client software (Visual Basic, C++, Java Applications etc whatever is supported on the client). Those PCs also have a variety of word processing macros, email, spreadsheets, shortcuts. bookmarks, web-based applications etc that individuals use to get day-to-day work done, access other systems, etc.
If you are able to take the PC and make a virtual copy of it for each user then each user should be able to access that virtual copy via his/her Iphone.
There are some technical issues of course. I am not certain if you need a VMclient loaded to the Iphone for example. Vmware may need Apple on that one. Or - and I think this likely - Apple may need VMware because this is such a killer application for their killer device. Any business about to replace PCs might as well replace many of them with Iphones.
What you have after technical issues is a gotomyPC arrangement but the PC could be powered down. You have a web appliance, full mobility, and depending on the web server and database server, possibly a faster solution. One can see further investment for the IPO money in the mechanism used to create the virtual copies.
For example the Virtual machine copy could be done every time the user powers down his/her PC and only what has changed gets copied so this is fast.
The Virtual Machine copy becomes a protection from viral attach and unintended consequences of Microsoft automated updates, like DVD devices becoming unattached as happened to me last week, if the virtual copy can also be copied to the PC. Plus users finally might be able to load user-owned software without the objection of the IT unit because if that software breaks or infects something there is a virtual copy to restore from.
More benefit, the virtual machine becomes a net-meeting platform because multiple users can access it at the same time for collaboration.
There is much work that could be done with load balancing as well.
Even better, a billing system for Web Appliance use. It is a no brainier. Say an investor wants to analyze a stock for purchase. Some developer can create a web appliance and bill for it perhaps by CPU cycles consumed or other mechanism common during the mainframe time share days.
Say someone has a killer music collection. If the billing mechanism exists that web appliance could handle paying the recording studio as well as developer. Films, same thing.
Upgrade to 64 bit technology is supported by VmWare.
