The cable industry doens't want you to pirate their signals so they are encrypted, the movie industry doesn't want you to film inside the theater so now they use night vision goggles, and your local 7-11 doesn't want you to walk off without paying for something just because you can reach the shelf.

True the record industry has done a ham fisted job of attempting to stop pirated content but again, I don't see that as being MS' fault.
