Solaris is optimized for SPARC
Sun hasn't abandoned SPARC ... they will simply have a multi platform strategy ... their problem is sustaining the R&D costs for both chip and OS. Fujitsu has a mainframe level SPARC machine and Sun and Fujitsu just announced they will join at the hip on making SPARC stay relevant at the high end (mainframe) and workstation.

On the low end blades and AMD boxes will fill the niche (probaly running Windows if the customer wants, or Solaris, or LINUX). And there will be overlap in the middle with x86 and SPARC workstations.

Add all the stuff you need to a AMD box to make it a true workstation and you have an expensive x86 box ... if that's what you want you can have it, but workstation customers typically want raw performance and care very little about chip since they have their own code to use all the power in the box (way more than just a fast CPU).
