Not Right
The more used Unix OS is HP-UX. Sun gained lot of market to HP, had stronger sales, bigger revenue for years (not necesarily bigger profit), but never won bigger market share. Then .com fall showed up, so Sun started to set.

But the important thing here and every body seems to forget Solaris was programmed for UltraSparc!!! Sun announced migrating to AMD or Intel. This CPU are CISC not RISC, porting Solaris to CISC (Athlon, Pentium or Xeon) cost lots of money; money that Sun doesn't have... so lets tie nuts with Linux... is here already working and kicking.

Anyway Sun Server where just cheap boxes, no ball of fire in it. Every Sun's TCP benchmark where bitten the day after by HP or IBM so damn easy. Even Java alway perform better on HP's 9000 server, "always". So it wasn't the best hardware it was the only... But without doubt I give you, Solaris was the real deal of Sun.
