"Ministry of Truth" strikes again
This is the second or third time I've seen this business about Red Hat "forking" Linux. Does ZDNet have an agenda here, or are advertising rates calculated on the number of talkback posts?

I asked my director of operations and maintenance about this, and he says Mr. Schwartz's allegation falls somewhere between the extremes of hogwash and deception. The staff have no problems whatsoever moving applications between the Linux distributions he keeps on hand for operational and evaluation purposes. The discriminators between distributions boil down principally to cost and support. If Mr. Schwartz has a point to make, he should come out with it so that potential customers can understand it, rather than trying to out-Darl Darl. There is only one original.

THe second place where this gent gets lost regards the "question" whether Red Hat Linux is really open source. This point might have some meaning to "true believers," but what on earth is the CEO of a large technology firm that is struggling to regain relevance driving at? I care if software provides the necessary functions, is reliable, is supportable and any number of other things, but I don't want the staff poring over source code - we pay them to do a job. Is is of no concern to me what licensing scheme the vendor uses (as long as it does not unduly constrain my firm), or the religious conviction of the CEO, or my rep's kid's names.

Sun was once a major vendor here. Its departure is little lamented.
