As you point out, there MUST be a lot of money to be gained or lost based
on which data format gets adopted.

Microsoft realizes that a very good, open, freely implementable, completely based on standards, file format is very bad for them because is levels the playing field and greatly improves interoperability.

IBM, not being the dominant player in office suites realizes that they have a LOT to gain from an open file format. They see the billions going to MS and want a piece of that.

So, no matter what Mass does, it might be hard to get rid of the lobbyists.

The problems caused by people having millions to buy influence . . . . .
