You assume there is a lot of value in MS protocols and file formats.
In fact, they are mostly junk, designed to cause interoperability problems through unnecessary complexity and lack of documentation. It would actually be cheaper and allow for increased innovation for all involved to move to open and well documented standards, but, Microsoft of course WANTS to maintain the compatibility problems. They sure do not want to compete on the merits.
