Unfortunetly BUISNESS is in essence
Survival of the fittest. Add the that a healthy dose of good old human greed, and you get what you described. Why on earth would IBM or others want in any way to spend more? Why would they in any way not take an advantage that might thwart a major competitor (someone who get's money's that they might if that someone did not exist)

As for Linux/Open Sorce. Well it was a formular that with the increadible market power and the tactics of MS in the past that had to come up eventually. MS made a practice of stamping out or buying out of doing any number of things to destroy or steal a companies products. Linux/Open Source is a different animal and something that MS finds itself in essence helpless to destroy. It has not central core, no true owner. No matter what MS does it will continue to exist. MS in many ways brought this onto herself.

Pharmacuticals....I am a diabetic with kidney failure. So I know a lot about dealing with this industry. They extend their patents way beyond the original patent deadline (to gouge the average American ever more) There is not competition to keep prices down and quality high...each pharmacutical picks it's own range of ills to create new medicines for and does not bother to compete with the others drug companies. Does anyone know why in the past few years there seems to be a new illness anounced and a new expensive drug to treat said illness just about the same time?

It's like this...here where I live is a street filled with auto dealerships. Each dealer ship has a range of auto's to fit anyones needs. So I can spend an afternoon finding the type of vehicle I need/want and go from dealership to dealership to get my best deal. With drugs it's a road with several dealerships...but they each only carry one type of vehicle. I find the dealership with the car I need....and the salesman from the start gives me attitude. Then he/she hands me a bill. It's way out of my price range and I get up to leave. The saleman reaches into his desk and grabs a rather large gun and presses the barrel of said gun to my temple. He then utters his closeing phrase "Buy or DIE" That is the extent of my choices.
