Being unfamiliar with the issue does reduce confidence in your conclusions.
Think about the issue this way: some work can be done either for free or from an individual who is being paid. A company decides to take the free work and lay off the paid individual.
This is the net impact of Linux/open source on employment.
Yes, if innovative software were being created by Linux/open source there'd be new jobs to replace the ones lost. But Linux/open source is so far settling for being a limited imitation of proprietary software.
Linux and employment: All pain, no gain.
